Rotary Club Of Park Cities/ Salvation Army Chili Day Shared by Orville (Orv) Salmon
Over sixty years ago one of my associates, a member of this club, asked me to join him as his guest at Rotary. As I recall, the club was then meeting at the Melrose Hotel on Oak Lawn. I joined him and the program for the day was the Annual Rotary/Salvation Army soup day. This day was sponsored by a generous club member who would provide generous helpings of his famous soup. Each member who attended the event would pay the regular cost of a Rotary meal plus any donation that they would like to make to support The Salvation Army. The total amount collected on the soup day was donated to support the Army's Red Kettle campaign.
Thirty years ago, another one of our fine members, Mr. Robert (Bob) Grossman, assumed the role of preparing his famous chili - ready to serve! The Rotary Club is grateful to Bob for his hard work on this partnership with The Salvation Army. During my chairmanship of the event, the Chili Day program has raised more than two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to support The Salvation Army Christmas efforts. Well over fifty thousand people were assisted during Christmas 2021 and the Army anticipates even more applicants for Christmas 2022. Your generous support in making Christmas merry and bright for those who need it most this year is most appreciated!
Don't miss our Annual Meeting at the Regular Meeting on December 2, 2022!
The club will vote on our Officers and Board members for Rotary Year 2023-24.

Park Cities Rotary event "Dentistry with a Heart" celebrated its 11th year on November 19th, 2022. We treated 19 patients from Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center for basic dental services of extractions, fillings and cleanings. Salvation Army has been a partner with D.W.A.H. from our 1st year and not only helped identify patients but hosted our dental pre screening on Nov. 17th. This early screening reduced onsite crowding at Agape, improved time and patient flow and allowed patients to go directly to their dental chair. Thank you James Bookman and Captain Cheryl Gibson with Salvation Army, Fred Brown and Dr. Rob Levy, Dr. Willard Tompson and Dr. Michael Rainwater, as the pre screening enabled a great start for the treatment day.
This was the 6th year Agape Clinic and 1st year with Mission East Dallas Dental Clinic hosting D.W.A.H. With this partnership of private practice dentists, Mission East Dallas and Agape clinic staffing and Park Cities Rotary organizing the event each year, in addition to dental treatment, our patients health vitals were checked with some coming back to Agape for future medical care.
Park Cities Rotary volunteers who guided us through the day; Chair - Fred Brown, Karen Farris, Ruth Alhilali, Phillip Bankhead, Paul Hoffmann, Ley Waggoner, Richard Stanford, Pam Carvey, Barbara Jeffries, Jenifer Hammond, Rob Levy, Jodie Ray, Kathleen Klaviter, Michael Rainwater and a Big Thank You!! to Patsy Watson who organized all the food for the day. Our dentist volunteers were Drs.; Chris Miller, Todd Ayars, Martin Kahn, Stephanie Melland, Rob Levy, Pat Wharry and Michael Rainwater. Thank you to our amazing Hygienists; Melissa Gruenwald, Sheila Coleman, Dina Moncada and Wendi Gray. As always nothing happens without assistants, Thank you Dulce Pardo and Sharon Montiel.
Working with Agape Clinic and Mission East Dallas is always such a blessing. Thank you from Agape Paul Hoffmann, Dr. Barbara Baxter and lucky to have Dora Gonzalez at the front desk. Thank you from Mission East Dallas Charles Wiltraut, Dr. Fahad Ashraf and your amazing staff mentioned above, truly a great Team. $19,050 of dentistry accomplished improved the lives of our patients and provided an opportunity for all volunteers to make a difference. From Jeff Sheehan, President-Elect of RCPC and President of the RCPC Foundation - 2022-23
The Rotary Club of Park Cities' Communities Fund was originally sponsored in the 1960’s by the Rotary Club of Park Cities (“RCPC”) for the purpose of providing an enduring legal entity through which members and friends of the Rotary Club of Park Cities might make donations for the good of mankind and the Dallas community. The fund continues to this day to consider internal and external grant requests submitted on the RCPC Foundation online grant portal found on the club website.
The following grant requests were approved at our August 2022 meeting:
• $1,000 grant for scholarships for McShan Elementary
• $4,380 grant for Dentistry With a Heart
• $5,000 grant for Attitudes & Attire*
*Emergency grant request approved in an Executive Committee conference call due to Labor Day flood damage in Dallas County which affected Attitudes & Attire’s operations
The Executive Team denied the following grant request:
• Addison Midday grant request for Philippine’s water project
The Executive Team voted to roll over the remaining $4,789 available grant monies until the 2022-2023 fiscal year, which started on July 1, 2022.
According to the Fund’s Policies and Procedures dated November 8, 2011, Section 11. Tenure; Removal Non-Ex Officio members of the Executive Committee serve four year terms. The Executive Team recommended to the RCPC Board that Daniel Drabinski replace Cleve Clinton as a Non-Ex Officio member of the Executive Committee. The RCPC Board unanimously approved his nomination. His term will be held from 2021-2025.
The fund balance as of May 11, 2021 was $1,847,218.00 (almost $400K higher than this time last year). The Communities Foundation of Texas has done an incredible job managing the fund. The amount available each year for grants is derived from an average over 16 quarters (4 years), then, 4.5% of that amount is the amount available for distribution the following year.
Our Sgt. at Arms Kyle Marmillion IN 2021-2022, reported that the RCPC Foundation fund donations thru 4-30-21 totals $62,822.10 from 89 donors!
To the Foundation Fund: $6,422.10 from 37 donors
To the Bonton Clinic: $56,400.00 from 52 donors
Your contributions make an incredible difference in the amount we are able to distribute to worthy local organizations.
