Update on DISD from DISD Superintendent Mike Hinojosa

Please join us on Friday, April 22nd for an informative update on Dallas ISD by DISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. Lunch is $20 or you can be a non-eater for $5.

Dr. Michael Hinojosa returned to Dallas ISD when he was named by the board of trustees to serve as superintendent in October 2015. Dr. Hinojosa has served 20 years as a superintendent/CEO of six public education systems, including two of the 25 largest school systems in America, Dallas ISD in Texas and the Cobb County School District in suburban Atlanta, Georgia. His career in public education, from teacher and coach to superintendent/CEO, spans more than three decades.

With a firm belief that education and not environment is the key to a student’s success, he has led several school districts to improved student achievement. Dr. Hinojosa’s recognitions include being named 2002 Superintendent of the Year by the Texas Association of School Boards and 2005 Superintendent of the Year by the University of Texas at Austin. He was honored as Distinguished Alumnus by the College of Education at Texas Tech University and as the Outstanding Latino Educator by the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents in 2014. He is a past president of the Texas Association of School Administrators. He has served as an educational consultant for various organizations that support public education, including as a master teacher and coach for the American Association of School Administrators and the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents.

Dr. Hinojosa, a proud graduate of Dallas Independent School District, holds a doctorate in education from the University of Texas at Austin. He and wife Kitty have two sons, graduates of Princeton University and Harvard University. He has a son from a previous marriage who graduated from Texas Tech University. All three attended Dallas ISD for a significant portion of their K-12 careers.

Superintendent Michael Hinojosa

By way of introduction, my name is Michael Hinojosa. I am proud to serve as Dallas ISD superintendent. Dallas is my home. I am a graduate of Sunset High School, started my career in education as a teacher and coach at W.H. Adamson High School, and have two sons who graduated from Hillcrest High School. I served an initial term as superintendent in Dallas ISD from 2005-2011, and returned as interim superintendent in July 2015.

In October 2015, the Board of Trustees formally approved my return to the district as superintendent.

As someone who has experienced our schools as a student, parent, and leader, I know how much the hard work and dedication of the staff and community have helped Dallas ISD students, and your efforts are both appreciated and admired.

Dallas ISD has set high expectations for our schools and put a number of initiatives in place with the goal of preparing every student for college and the workforce. We will continue to uphold those high expectations and implement the key initiatives already underway, including the Teacher Excellence Initiative, more Public School Choice opportunities, and expanded Early Childhood and Career and Technical Education programs, all of which are in the best interest of our students.

I look forward to working with you to help all Dallas ISD students and staff members succeed in every way.

Michael Hinojosa

Earth Day Texas!
Please join us on Friday, April 15th for a great program on Earth Day by Ken Klaveness, Executive Director of Earth Day Texas.

Talk about issues, opportunities, and solutions. Earth Day Texas is an interactive experience where people come to immerse themselves in the opportunities and solutions presented by today’s environmental issues. As an exhibitor and participant in Earth Day Texas, you have the chance to spread knowledge, tell your story, garner fresh support, attract new donors, customers or volunteers, and help advance the movement. Earth Day Texas is one of the only forums where environmental non-profits, businesses, academic institutions and government agencies unite to show people how to move the needle in all areas of their personal and professional lives!

This Earth Day, let’s get really big stuff done for our planet.

What are we waiting for? The time is now.

Earth Day 2016 - Trees for the Earth poster

The movement continues.

We are now entering the 46th year of a movement that continues to inspire, challenge ideas, ignite passion, and motivate people to action.

In 1970, the year of our first Earth Day, the movement gave voice to an emerging consciousness, channeling human energy toward environmental issues. Forty-six years later, we continue to lead with groundbreaking ideas and by the power of our example.

And so it begins. Today. Right here and right now. Earth Day is more than just a single day — April 22, 2016. It’s bigger than attending a rally and taking a stand.

This Earth Day and beyond, let’s make big stuff happen. Let’s plant 7.8 billion trees for the Earth. Let’s divest from fossil fuels and make cities 100% renewable. Let’s take the momentum from the Paris Climate Summit and build on it.

Let’s start now. And let’s not stop.

Update on the Dallas City Council
Please join us on Friday, April 8th for an update on what's going on in Dallas and with City Council by City Council member Angela Hunt!

"In her eight years on the council, Hunt has become one of the city’s most recognizable political figures, known for often taking stands that put her at odds with the city’s political and business establishment.

Now, with Hunt forced to step down because of term limits, seven candidates are hoping to replace her and represent a district that includes Uptown, downtown, Turtle Creek and the M Streets.

The election is May 11, but the number of candidates in District 14 all but ensures that Hunt’s successor won’t be chosen on that day. Unless one of the seven candidates captures a majority of votes, the two top finishers will meet in a June 15 runoff." http://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/headlines/20130420-angela-hunts-shadow-looms-large-over-dallas-city-council-seat-shes-vacating.ece

It is going to be a fun and informative meeting! Make plans now to attend!

Trinity Toll Road Update: Deja Vu All Over Again

Last year, Larry Beasley presented the “Dream Team’s” Charrette Report to the Council. The Report rejected Alternative 3C’s design for the Trinity Parkway and called for a smaller, slower park road. For the past eight months, a technical design team has been further engineering plans for the road.

For the past two months, the Trinity Parkway Advisory Committee has been meeting behind closed doors to review the resulting technical design of the Trinity Parkway. Councilmember Sandy Greyson and former NTTA Chair Jere Thompson were appointed by the mayor to lead the committee. They each appointed three other members: Councilmember Greyson appointed me, Rep. Rafael Anchia, and Bob Meckfessel. Mr. Thompson appointed Ambassador Ron Kirk, Chancellor Lee Jackson, and Mary Ceverha. Our task was to advise the council as to whether the technical design accurately followed the original Charrette Vision.

The Advisory Committee’s work is completed and today the Committee made presentations to the Dallas City Council Transportation and Trinity River Committee. Our Committee was not in agreement. Rep. Rafael Anchia and I presented our conclusions. You can read our report and read our statement to the committee.

To cut to the chase: Last year we thought we were (finally) getting a low-speed, meandering park access road. Instead, according to the technical design, we are getting a highway.

The design and geometry of the road will allow for high speeds: the meanders have been straightened, the lanes widened, the deceleration lanes to parking areas lengthened, and the shoulders turned from grass to gravel. At every decision tree, at every fork in the road, design choices were made to make the road straighter, wider, longer, and faster. (Check out the animation and read the briefing to the council committee.)

At the conclusion of the presentations, we were glad that the committee agreed that the public should (finally) have the opportunity to weigh in on this project. The council committee wants more public input before the road moves to 65% design. But the chair of the committee, Councilmember Lee Kleinman, stated that he wanted a “brief” period of public input, “like 30 days.”

Your voices will be very important in this conversation. We have seen this all before. This is the Balanced Vision Plan round 2.

More to come….

Angela

Council on Legislation to Meet in Chicago April 10th-15th

COUNCIL ON LEGISLATION TO MEET IN CHICAGO 10-15 APRIL

Representatives at the 2013 Council on Legislation hold up green cards to demonstrate a yes vote on a motion.

Representatives from Rotary clubs worldwide will gather in Chicago 10-15 April to consider changes to the policies that guide Rotary International and its member clubs.

The Council on Legislation meets every three years and is an essential part of Rotary's governance. The representatives -- one from each Rotary district -- review and vote on proposals that seek to change Rotary's constitutional documentsand on resolutions that express an opinion or make a recommendation to the Rotary International Board of Directors.

Get live updates and daily vote totals on My Rotary beginning 11 April.

Many of this year's proposed changes are designed to increase membership by giving clubs greater flexibility in the timing and the nature of their meetings. Other proposals would amend membership requirements.

Over the decades, Council representatives have debated virtually every nuance of Rotary policy and membership and attendance rules. The five-day meeting is one of Rotary's primary agents for change, allowing the organization to evaluate and enhance its relevance in a rapidly changing world.

Rotary International is an international civic organization that provides great opportunities for international service, community service, fellowship, networking, and learning more about our local community. The Rotary Club of Park Cities does a tremendous amount of great work for the community through its work with a number of non-profit organizations. The mobile food pantry truck sends food throughout North Texas. Our club participates in the food distribution monthly. Other organizations can also participate and “Adopt a Stop” for food distribution. Our Rotary club also works with a number of other non-profits such as Fisher House, the Ronald McDonald House, Meals on Wheels, Scottish Rite, the Salvation Army, and a number of others.
